Talk on Curlew Action’s successful Natural History GCSE Campaign and future plans, at Cerne Abbas Village Hall, on Saturday 16th November, 11 am start, prior to our 87th AGM. Our President, Kate Adie, is chairing the meeting.

12th November update: Because of the reviewing of so many initiatives with the new government, the Natural History GCSE has been put on the back burner for the time being, which is agonising and annoying. So, Roger is giving a more general talk on ‘The Challenge of Nature Literacy’ looking at nature education, the work of Curlew Action and his feelings about the state of nature and nature literacy in Britain following 4 years when he has walked a total of 10,000 miles around all corners of the country researching and writing about local activism.

We look forward to returning to Cerne Abbas Village Hall, on Saturday 16th November, 11 am start, for our 87th AGM. Please read the draft Minutes for the 2023 AGM.  Our President, Kate Adie, is chairing the meeting. We will start the meeting with Roger Morgan-Grenville, Curlew Action Chair, giving a talk on the charity’s successful Natural History GCSE Campaign and future plans. We aim to finish the AGM by 1pm.  A warm invitation to the Talk and AGM is extended to members and non-members alike, and we will be serving tea/coffee afterwards.

Mary Colwell, the founder of Curlew Action, has spearheaded the campaign for a GCSE in Natural History since 2011, which was confirmed by the department of education in April 2022. This new qualification is set to be introduced in schools by September 2025. A GCSE in Natural History is a unique opportunity for young people to engage with wildlife in a structured, guided way, to learn the skills of a naturalist at a time when we need them more than ever. Roger works on the Natural History GCSE campaign and will share with us their future plans.

Roger was a soldier in the Royal Green Jackets for nine years, during which time he served on five continents, and led the first expedition to successfully retrace Shackleton’s extraordinary journey across the island of South Georgia. As well as managing a housewares company, Roger helped to found the charity Help for Heroes, and was its first head fundraiser. Roger is an author, writing on both natural history and sport, as well as an enthusiastic amateur beekeeper and lifelong lover of birds.

Do come, meet some of your fellow members, and see what we are up to. A warm invitation to the Talk and AGM is extended to members and non-members alike. We would be most grateful though if you can confirm your attendance with names of attendees to Linda Williams at info@dorset-cpre.org.uk.
